Department of Public Safety
Student Security Officers
The Student Security Unit is a Division of the Department of Public Safety. This unit is made up of Truman State University students who are employed as student security officers. These student security officers provide a very important service to the Department of Public Safety and to the University as a whole. Student security officers are responsible for a variety of duties which allow the University police officers more availability to handle criminal matters and emergency calls for service.
Student security officers check and secure University buildings. They provide escorts to persons who want someone to accompany them from one place to another on campus. They patrol University owned property looking for criminal activity, hazardous situations, and suspicious behavior. This is of great benefit to the University police officers as the student security officers report these types of situations when they observe them, and the situation can quickly be checked out lessening the chance of a situation worsening. Student security officers also assist by helping with crowd control and traffic control at sporting events and special events.
